Our single-cell and bulk transcriptome analyses revealed striking molecular heterogeneity in the mesenchymal cells of embryonic submandibular and parotid salivary glands during bud initiation, including distinct mesodermal and neural crest-derived molecular signatures that foreshadow later functions.
